Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree best builds — the four that actually carry the DLC

Shadow of the Erdtree shipped a lot of new weapons, ashes of war, and spells, and the community spent the first year sorting which of them actually scale into the late DLC bosses. This list ranks the four builds that consistently clear Messmer, Bayle, and Radahn (Promised Consort) at standard NG difficulty, with a fifth honourable mention for PvP-specific use. It assumes you’ve finished the base game and are heading into the DLC at roughly RL 150-180.

TL;DR

  • Easiest DLC clear: Blasphemous Blade Faith. The same broken build the base game has had since 2022, still broken, still beats DLC bosses.
  • Highest damage ceiling: Bloodfiend’s Arm Bleed (Strength/Arcane). New DLC weapon, scales harder than any base-game bleed build.
  • Best PvE caster: Impenetrable Thorns Bleed-caster.
  • Best fast/mobile DLC pick: Backhand Blade Bleed.
  • PvP meta: Backhand Blade with Smithscript Cirque (different list — covered briefly at the bottom).

The one rule that matters more than which weapon you pick: collect Scadutree Fragments. Your effective power in the DLC is multiplied by your Blessing level, not your character level. A Blessing 12 character at character level 150 outdamages a Blessing 4 character at level 300. Build choice matters; Blessing matters more.

The Scadutree rule (read this before anything else)

In Shadow of the Erdtree, every enemy gets a flat damage multiplier and damage-reduction multiplier based on your Scadutree Blessing level, ranging from 0 to 20. The difference between Blessing 0 and Blessing 20 is roughly a 100% damage increase and a 50% damage reduction. That’s bigger than what any single weapon swap or ash of war can give you.

The implication: if you’re struggling with Messmer or Bayle, the right response isn’t to respec into a different build. The right response is to backtrack and find more fragments. The DLC seeds them across major rest areas, and finding 8-12 before tackling Messmer makes the entire midgame go from “wall” to “fight.” Don’t engage Messmer below Blessing 6. Don’t engage Radahn below Blessing 14.

The four builds that carry the DLC

Blasphemous Blade Faith (the easiest)

The Blasphemous Blade has been the easy-mode build since base Elden Ring shipped, and FromSoftware did not nerf it for the DLC. Taker’s Flames — the ash of war — deals heavy fire damage in an AoE and heals you for a chunk of every kill within range. Against any boss with multiple staggers or any enemy crowd, Taker’s Flames is a one-button win condition.

Stats: 60 Faith, 50 Vigor, 40 Mind, 20 Endurance, rest into Strength to swing it. The actual scaling math doesn’t reward going above 60 Faith for Taker’s Flames damage; mind levels matter more than you’d think because the ash is FP-hungry.

Why it works in the DLC: the heal-on-kill mechanic is uniquely strong against the DLC’s heavy-add fights (Hippopotamus, Death Knight encounters, the Shadow Keep approach). Bosses you’d otherwise struggle on stop being threatening because you’re healing back to full between every casting cycle.

Why you might skip it: if you’ve already cleared the base game with this build, the DLC clear will feel routine. Faster, deeper builds make the DLC content actually engaging.

Bloodfiend’s Arm Bleed (Strength/Arcane, the highest ceiling)

The Bloodfiend’s Arm is a new DLC colossal greatsword that scales with Strength and Arcane and builds bleed at a rate the base game’s bleed weapons couldn’t match. Infused with Blood Affinity and combined with the Axe Talisman, Lord of Blood’s Exultation, and Two-Handed Sword Talisman, the heavy attack chain on the Bloodfiend’s Arm staggers and bleeds DLC bosses faster than any other combination in the game.

Stats: 60 Strength, 35 Arcane, 50 Vigor, 30 Endurance. Two-handed grip is the playstyle the build is balanced around.

Why it works in the DLC: the bleed proc damage scales with Arcane in a way that almost every other DLC weapon does not, and the Bloodfiend’s Arm’s moveset has a stagger-then-bleed-proc loop that fells Messmer, Radahn, and Bayle in 3-5 cycles each.

Why you might skip it: the Bloodfiend’s Arm comes online late — you have to clear partway through the DLC to obtain it. It’s an upgrade once you have it, not a starting build.

Impenetrable Thorns (the best PvE caster)

Impenetrable Thorns is a new DLC incantation that fires bleed-status thorns at the target on a longish cooldown. Used by a Faith-Arcane caster with the right talismans, the bleed buildup from Impenetrable Thorns plus a backup weapon’s hit damage drops most DLC bosses faster than melee-only builds can.

Stats: 60 Faith, 30 Arcane, 50 Mind, 40 Vigor.

Why it works in the DLC: caster builds in vanilla Elden Ring were generally weaker than melee builds for boss clears. The DLC added several new offensive incantations that flipped that math. Impenetrable Thorns is the cleanest example.

Why you might skip it: caster builds require more positioning discipline than melee. If you’re new to FromSoftware games and the DLC is your first hard-difficulty content, melee is more forgiving.

Backhand Blade Bleed (the fast/mobile pick)

The Backhand Blade is a new DLC light weapon class — extremely fast attacks, low stagger threshold, high bleed buildup, exceptional dodge mobility. Run two-handed with Blood Affinity, paired with Rolling Sparks or Bloody Slash as the ash of war, and you have a build that out-mobiles every boss in the DLC.

Stats: 50 Dexterity, 40 Arcane, 50 Vigor, 30 Endurance.

Why it works in the DLC: several of the DLC’s hardest fights (Bayle’s flame attacks, Radahn’s clones) punish slow rolls and reward fast positional play. Backhand Blade gives you the fastest action economy in the game.

Why you might skip it: the low stagger threshold means bosses interrupt your combos more often than they would against a colossal weapon. You need to be comfortable with FromSoftware combat fundamentals. New players should pick a more forgiving build.

What’s worth using but not in the top four

  • Milady — top PvE light greatsword in the DLC, but slightly worse than Backhand Blade for boss clears. Better PvE general-purpose pick if you’re not bleed-focused.
  • Rellana’s Twin Blades — flashy moveset, comparable damage to top builds in skilled hands, but more punishing for new players.
  • Star-Lined Sword — strong fast weapon but outclassed by Backhand Blade for the same playstyle.
  • Dryleaf Arts — fist weapon class, fun, viable for a clear but objectively weaker than the four picks above.
  • Smithscript Cirque — PvP meta weapon. Mention because it’s the dominant DLC PvP pick; PvE-only players can skip.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring Scadutree Blessings. Already covered, worth repeating. If a boss feels impossible, get more fragments.
  • Sticking with your base-game build without checking DLC scaling. The DLC weapons rebalance the meta. Builds that were S-tier in base Elden Ring are A-tier or B-tier in the DLC.
  • Stacking too many bleed talismans without bleed buildup. Axe Talisman + Lord of Blood’s Exultation only fire after a bleed proc. If your weapon doesn’t actually proc bleed, those talismans are doing nothing.
  • Skipping summoning Mimic Tear. The DLC bosses are tuned for solo, but the Mimic Tear summon legitimately halves boss difficulty. There’s no shame in it; FromSoftware shipped the option for a reason.
  • Engaging Messmer at low Blessing. Messmer is the hardest “first major DLC boss” in any FromSoftware DLC. Don’t fight him below Blessing 6.
